Francis Bacon by Lucian Freud
TIMES ARE GETTING HARD
A Lucian Freud portrait of his friend Francis Bacon has sold for £5.4 million at auction, significantly less than expected.
The unfinished work, one of only two oil paintings that Freud ever undertook of Bacon, had been predicted to fetch up to £7 million when it went under the hammer at Christie's in London.
Graham Sutherland, a mutual friend and artist, introduced Freud to Bacon in 1945, inviting them to his house. They formed a close friendship and saw much of one another in the following years.
Bacon had a great influence on the younger Freud and is often credited with liberating his style and fuelling his desire to depict human life.

Bacon also painted Freud on several occasions

I think Freud's art is horrible. Who makes the rule that something is worth millions and another is not worth a bean? Many a French artist starved back in the 1800's. Now the paintings are worth billions. Very peculiar. Does anyone out there have any answers for me please? I see the beauty in this face but I see beauty in everyone's face. So why is this any different?
