Two supermarkets came to the aid of hard-pressed motorists last night – slashing up to 4p off a litre of fuel in response to a fall in oil prices.

Morrisons fired the first salvo in the price war when it cut petrol from an average 117.92p to 113.93p and diesel from 131.23p to 127.23p at 6pm.

Asda responded by announcing it will reduce fuel by 3p per litre from 6am today.

Unleaded falls from 116.9p to 113.9p a litre and diesel to 128.9p from 131.9p at 170 forecourts.

The national average for petrol before the reductions was 119.5p.

Diesel stood at 133p.

A barrel of oil has dropped from a peak of 147 dollars to 130 dollars in recent weeks.

Mark Gunter, Morrisons Group Store Operations Director, said: “We are ensuring our customers reap the benefit by passing on the saving quickly for cheaper prices at the pumps.”

Asda’s trading director David Miles said: “Customers need as much help as possible.”

AA president Edmund King called the price cuts “excellent news”.
