HOW LONG ARE YOUR SOCKS?

by kendrive @ Sunday, Jul. 13, 2008 - 10:34:07 am

The coastal town of Frinton-on-Sea, Essex was developed as a seaside resort at the end of the 19th century and has preserved an air of Victorian gentility.

It has been ridiculed for its refusal to be dragged into the 21st century and the inhabitants have strongly opposed any attempt at modernisation.

Until recently, the town made boast of having no public houses within its confines. Hoever, all that changed in 2000 when "The Lock & Barrel" opened.

The long opposition to public houses was rooted in a desire to preserve Frinton's genteel character rather than any enthusiasm for prohibition.

Opinion within the town was divided between those who continued to insist that admitting a pub to the town would be the first step on the path to its ruin and those who welcomed the addition of a congenial venue in which to socialise in the evening.

In 1992, the first fish and chip shop was opened in Frinton: this, too, met with much disapproval from the local residents who fought its arrival.

Now another bastion of gentilty has been removed!

GOLF CLUB ENDS 113-YEAR SOCK RULE

Men have been given permission to show off their legs at an Essex golf club for the first time in 113 years.

Members of Frinton Golf Club were previously required to wear knee-length socks with shorts.

But now committee members have relaxed the rule and men can wear short socks - a move that officials said has divided the club's 600 members.

The issue was raised because the club had growing numbers of junior members who objected to knee-length socks.

Some visiting teams were also said to have been unhappy about having to don long socks at Frinton.

The club, founded in 1895, still insists that men's shirts must have collars and shorts must be tailored.

A dress code reminds golfers that: "No denim clothing, tracksuits or shell suits should be worn either on the courses or in the clubhouse."

Nick Sams, a club professional, said: "The rule's just been changed. Not everybody's happy. It's a very traditional club."

I am not sure that Frinton is ready for this yet:

How about the Bermudian executives? Bermuda shorts, knee socks, lace-up shoes, a tie, white shirt and a jacket. Riding to work each morning on their little motorcyles was a hearty sight for the tourists in Hamilton, those who had just come off the great ships in Hamilton harbour.

Lots of knees to see! Newspaper and briefcase attached at the back with Bungee cords. Possibly a sandwich in the briefcase. Only in Bermuda! (1960's)

Do they still ride their little cycles to work anyone?
